My name is Rachel, I am 23 years old, and I’m from Seattle, WA. Although I was raised by my two loving grandparents, I had an addicted mother who caused a lot of turmoil in my life. In my youth I had big dreams and was very capable. However, when I got to High School I began experimenting with drugs and alcohol. By the time I was eighteen years old I was fully addicted to prescription medication. At nineteen years old I began using methamphetamines with my mother, and when I was twenty I tried heroin for the first time. My addiction lead me to some very dark places, including over dosing four times and nearly losing my life. After my Grandfather, who raised me, passed away in March 2012 everything in my world turned black. I lost any will I had left to live and began to cry out to God, ” Lord, please take me to Heaven I don’t want to live anymore, or send me some help!” Three months later I heard the testimony of a girl who had completed the program at Brooklyn Teen Challenge and with the help of a pastor, Jesse Owens, I had the opportunity to come to New York and get the healing I needed as well. I completed the year program here at the Walter Hoving Home in August 2013 and my life has been radically transformed by God’s power, love, and grace. I could’ve never imagined that my life could be this good and I am so grateful that God has given me this second chance. I absolutely love working at the home and continue to strive to know God more and walk in His will. Jesus Christ saved my life and for me there is no looking back!
“Forget the former things;
do not dwell on the past.
See, I am doing a new thing!
Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?
I am making a way in the wilderness
and streams in the wasteland.”
