Completion Days are some of my favorite days here at the Home – reflecting on a lady from when she came into the program and the change that took place during her time here! God is certainly faithful! And these changes are possible through your prayers and support!

This was a special completion because we, as a ministry have been praying for Penny for over 30 years. Elsie, known as “Mom B” met her in prison over 30 years ago. She visited and ministered to her all these years. Last year when she was paroled she entered the program. And it has been amazing to watch God work in her life. She is in our Emerging Leader program and will continue her leadership training as our Intake Coordinator over the next few months. Penny is an inspiration to us all! She was abused by her mother as a child and put into foster care at the age of 7. Life was a mess for her and she ended up in prison. But God has stepped in and change her life. 2 Corinthians 5:17 – “If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!”

Thank you for all you do in helping us in helping women find new hope in Christ.

This letter was written by a mother of one our graduates and I was touched by its honesty, hope and healing and thought I would share it with you . . .

As a mother it is hard to see your child suffer through pain and hurt, but even more hurtful is to realize you had contributed to that pain and hurt. But the Lord has a way of healing your hurts at the same time he’s working out His plan and purpose in my life and my daughter’s. Over the years, you watch and pray that what you think is going on is not because you don’t what to face the hurt. Pride keeps you from admitting that your daughter is caught up in a lifestyle that is going to kill her, drugs. Reality sets in when the Lord makes you face your fears and then will not let you do anything to help because He is developing something in you call Faith and Hope. For prideful people is easy to say I did this to help my daughter or I did that for my daughter but for the Lord to accomplish his plan and purpose in her life, He had to move me out of the way. He removed all of the security blankets for her to fall back on, because he was transforming her from a ugly caterpillar to a beautiful butterfly. And only Jesus can do that with His Word. I watched and trusted Him as he took her through a life of rebellion, lies and distrust to someone who depends on Him and displays compassion for others because of what He did for her. In Romans 8:28 says that all things are working together (fitting into his plan) for good for those that love Him and are called according to His purpose. But then it says, that we are destined from the beginning to be molded to His image. That is what He is doing with and through my daughter. He is transforming her right before my eyes and that is a blessing to see.

Trusting in the God of hope who fills us with joy and peace as we trust in Him,

so that we will overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Tina’s Story: I am 39 years old. I was born in Allentown, PA. I have good and bad memories of my childhood. My father was an alcoholic, and I would often witness him beating my mother up. I would hide under the bed until the cops came and arrested him. My parents got divorced, and when I was 8 my mother got saved and brought me up in a Christian home. I was baptized at age 15 and was home schooled. By the age of 20, I was making poor choices, hanging around with the wrong people and going to raves, and began doing hard-core drugs. I fell in love with a man that I dated for six years, until he left me for another man. I was crushed and blamed myself. I felt completely empty, and began going out to bars, living a careless life, allowing drugs and alcohol to run my life. At age 26, I decided to go to college. I got my B.A., but I was still empty, lost, and unhappy. I kept God out of my equation, and went back to my old lifestyle. By 2009 I had a trail of DUIs. I spent time in jail, but that didn’t stop me. While on probation I had a heated argument with my sister and drank and drove. I woke up in the hospital with a blood alcohol level of .054% and was on life support. The doctors told my mom I wouldn’t make it, but she prayed to God, put her hands on me, and told God that she was giving me back to Him. God spared my life. I was arrested for that DUI and spent more time in jail. That was when I decided to get out of the pit I had created for myself, and gave my life back to God. I still had to face charges for my third DUI, and I knew that being institutionalized would not free me from my addiction because I was not free in Christ. I heard about the Walter Hoving Home and entered the program.

Being at the Home has been amazing. I know what real freedom is. I am coming to know God all over again. Without Him I was empty. I am now at peace and in the process of healing. I know I don’t want to be the old person I was. I am a new creation in Christ, and my past is forgiven. My plan is to stay strong, have faith in God, and put my life in His hands. Where He leads me I will follow.

Ephesians 2:4-5: But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions — it is by grace you have been saved.

God has done a great work in her life since being at the Walter Hoving Home. After 9 years she was able to see her two children and is continuing to work on building a relationship with them. Her goals in the near future are to obtain her GED and enter into school to become a nursing assistant with her ultimate goal to be a nurse. She shared with us this morning that she wants to take the joy she has and share it with others in the hospital. She wants her laughter to brighten the difficult days of others and we believe she can do this with her winning smile and affectionate laughter. She said she knows God has made her loud and bold and she wants to use it to serve others. What a testimony!

I know you must be thinking it is about time that the Walter Hoving Home has updated their website. It has been many months of planning, evaluating and implementing this needed tool in our ministry. Much of the delay has been myself – the vastness of the project has caused much anxiety and procrastination. After many failed attempts – one of them being me trying to teach myself to build a website – I thought through my mental database and realized that one of our ladies was an expert at this type of work. I called her and within a few months a new website is launched.

I don’t know if others have this problem of seeing the vastness of a project and my lack of knowledge in the area and become completely overwhelmed. That is when I believe God provides people to help us if we will just ask and seek the right sources. As I am thinking back to how easy this has seemed when I put it in the right hands I think of the foolishness of putting it off because I didn’t know what to do.

So enjoy our new website and come back often for new content and events!

One of my favorite job responsibilities here at Walter Hoving Home is presenting completion certificates. And I had the privilege of presenting Christina H. with hers on May 3, 2012. I remember back to when Christina walked in – she wouldn’t lift her head or look me in the eyes. She was broken and life had shattered her hopes and dreams. She was a wife, mother and woman that looked like all had been taken from her. Over the next year, we watched her come alive as she turned her life over to Jesus. She began living in the Truth of God’s work and believing that what He said about her was true. And in that time she rediscovered her gift for poetry. She left this poem in my box on the day she left. I have it framed in my office and wanted to share it with you . . .

Changed

by Christina H.

When I think about the things I’ve done,
I can sit and smile because I have won.

I won freedom through Jesus Christ,
My wrongdoings, my sins, He paid a price.

No longer depressed, hardly ever sad,
I’ve learned to be happy, completely glad.

Glad that He gave me a second chance,
To participate in life’s amazing dance.

Through God I’m healed, from all the misuse,
Bullying, pain and many years of abuse.

When I had come to the Walter Hoving Home,
I didn’t have God and was utterly alone.

I came broken, bitter, angry and depressed,
My life was in turmoil, such a tangled mess.

I had to surrender, trust Him every day,
To take care of me and have His way.

My life, I know, will never be the same,
I’ve got nothing to lose, and everything to gain.

I’ll hold onto God and never let go,
Compassion, love are the seeds I’ll sow.
